I am sad to learn of Doug's passing. He let me stay in his apartment downstairs of his parents' home on Prince Street over the summer of 1995. I remember when Rose and J-P were gone for a few days, and Doug invited me to go to McDonald's with him for dinner. I saw Doug again when I visited town in 2013. The moment he saw me, despite it being nearly 18 years, he looked at me and said "You're back!" It was an incredible welcome. I wish I had been able to make it back to see him and Rose this past year. In fact, our last facebook exchange, he asked why I hadn't made it back to Hearst. Will always remember you Doug and the incredibly good times I had while living in Hearst with you and your parents that summer. RIP.

My condolences to the Bourgeault family. Doug would often show up at our hockey and broomball games in Hearst. He would join our team in the players bench and open and close the door for us. He kept stats and at the end of the game he would tell you how many goals, assists and penalties you had. Doug was always cheerful and would stop for a conversation or two. R. I. P. Doug.

Dear Mike and Family: it’s with deep sadness that I express condolences on the death Doug. When we lived in Hearst he brought such joy to our lives. He had scheduled us into his regular weekly rounds around town on his three wheeled bike. He loved to drop by and we loved having him. I’m sorry that I am in the Ivory Coast on route back to Canada and so will miss the funeral. I will have a mass said for Doug when I get home. Blessings, Brian Sullivan

There are just too many memories to Doug to be able to share in this space, but growing up with the Bourgesult family there have been special moments that always had a connect to Doug....aka Swede, Doug the Plug, Bone Rack, etc., etc. In the sixties it started with the sandlot baseball games and our field was the CNR roadway located behind what is today the Fresh Off The Block meat shop. After our ball game was over it was pile into the Palmquist smallish living room to watch Saturday afternoon New York Yankees baseball on TV, and yes, have some home made Swedish baked treats made by Mrs. Palmquist. YUMMY. To those Yankee ball games so many years ago, and if you were able to ask Doug, he would recite each player and position without any hesitation and that included other MLB teams as well. His memory never seemed to amaze us and he rarely lost an argument to any fact. Memories come from the days at the cottage, his Special Olympic feats, his love for bowling and his friends. If you were considered a friend it was for life. He had his challenges along the way, but nothing held him back. If asked if he wanted to do something his answer was "not today ...too busy". Doug was that special guy and the news to his passing continues to be with shock and disbelief and to the family I extend my hand with concern, friendship, and the sincerest of sympathies.

My deepest condolences to Doug’s beloved mother Rose and family. Doug was such a sweet, gentle and caring friend. His smile and laughter was sincere, infectious and heartwarming. Doug’s passing is a profound loss for many of us who were fortunate to have been a too brief moment of his life.
